Okay. I have a set of Intermountain F-7's, C&O Railway that I want to permanently and prototypically lash up as an A-B-A unit.

The following are predicated on fitting to Intermountain shells and motor mechanism frames.

    </font>
    • WHAT is the best coupler for placing on each end of the B unit and the rear-ends of the two A units? I want to use KADEE's. Do not the #5's have too long a shank for close coupling A-B-A's? </font>
    • WHAT is the best diaphram to use between the doors of the A and B units? I have seen some on display at train shows and was "wowed" by how they look. I intend on extending the diagram in the lashed position since I intend on keeping these "puppies" permanently, or semi-permanently together. WHO makes a good looking diaphram??? I dont like the Walthers plastic/rubber ones because they cannot be extended to full position. </font>
Have at it... I am all ears. Need some advice from someone who may have been through this.
    Thanks!

    Kitbash,
I have used American Limiteds connection kits, (operating diaphragms and close coupling) on Athearn F's, Stewart F's and PK2 E8/9's and Eriebuilts.
I don't have any Intermountain F's, (yet, that is :D ) I have heard that they are similar to Stewarts F's so you may want to check out the kits for them. Let me, (or better yet all of us) know if they work! ;)

    2Slim. THANK YOU!

I looked them up on the web and Am. Ltd. may be just the ticket. Thanks for suggesting them.

Yes, I will advise how this turns out. MAYBE if I can get off my duff and FINALLY get the digital camera out of the box, I can score some pictures to boot.

    Kitbash,
I got a look at the Intermountain drive on their website, it does indeed look like a Stewart drive.
I dug out one of my Stewart F sets and realized that I actually used a KD Stewart kit for use with their 30 series short shank couplers for close coupling. The diaphragms are American Limited.
I must have done these before AL was making the connection kits.
The KD numbers are 380-450 Brackets (4.95) and 380-33 Short centerset shank couplers (3.30) these are Walthers part numbers.
At least you have a alternative if you don't like the looks of the AL kit.

Thank you! I have ordered the Am. Ltd. Stewart diaphrams. I understand from Am. Ltd. they can easily be modified for the Intermountain shells.

So, I should have them in my hands next week.

I have printed out your suggestion on KD's just in case.

    THANK you for the input.
