I came upon the Amercian Heritage History of Railroads in America published in 1975. There is a picture of the De Coursey classification yard in this book that is amazing. I have looked on the internet and can not find a picture of this yard. Can anyone help. I can't get it to scan properly! If this topic needs to be moves please move to the appropriate forum.
Here is what I was able to find This yard was the former L&N yard near Covington KY that they used to serve the Cincinnati OH area. It is apparently now closed. CSX has since consolidated most of its operations in the former B&O Queensgate yard in Cincinnati. There is a photo of the old DeCoursey engine terminal here http://www.herronrail.com/Images/LN/decourse.jpg The old yard shows up on a USGS topographic map here http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=16&n=4321231&e=717641&s=25 The map coordinates are 39° 00' 54"N, 84° 29' 11"W If you can find a website that has aerial photos you may be able to find it there. I tried one at http://www.terraserver.com but it had no image for those coordinates eNjoy Don B
Thanks, the photo in the book is an aerial photo and it is really nice, and the yard is huge. I'll keep trying to get the scanner to work. This is a really cool photo that I think most would enjoy. I'm sure there's a photo on the net somewhere. Thing is finding it : ) This is just the coolest book. It starts out with the beginning of the railroads in the late 1800's and goes all the way to when it was published in the 70's. I'm sure some folk's here have it. I wonder how long it would take to model that yard in N-scale, how much money : ) There must be a billion switches in that yard : ) I can't even get a few to work properly on my layout. Keeping along with this tread, is there a picture I can find on Minot ND's Gavin Yard built in 1955, and the surrounding facilities/ trackage? The present yard is much condensed form it's original size.
Neff Video's 'DT&I Part III' show's some L&N and DT&I action in this yard in the mid 1980's. "The DT&I in Color" by Morning Sun also has some good shots of the Ohio River bridge and street running operated by the L&N in Cincinnati.
