Many of you were very, very helpful in explaining the sequence for synching chuff rate. I got to comprehend it quite thoroughly since then and know what CVs to change to do this (25 to16, 29 bit 4 to 1, set 28 speed, etc.). What I still don't understand is how we derive CV values for 209, 210 and 212 whom one or two said to change. One member stated he sets 209, 210 to 100 value and 212 and (I think 10, bemf ) to 200. I do same and proceed to begin the task of setting 67 through 94, CV 116 speed step 8, etc., but never am sure if those first CVs are to be same for my loco(s). And, after all this time they still (HO Bachs connie and mogul ) are not that great.. I must have spent some accumulated 20 hours over this and yet again going to the forum over it. One major flaw is (NCE) ' Program on the main ' does not allow one to change 116 (chuff rate) while rolling. I always have to stop and guestimate where to put it via ' use prog track' to SEE the numerical change I make. Then go back to HOME screen a watch rods again. It gets quite tedious.

Mark, that is odd if true. What makes you say NCE won't allow a loco to be in a steady state, either at rest or in motion, when you enter Ops Mode? Even so, just hit emergency stop, enter Ops, add/drop 5 to the last [recorded] value for CV 116. Accelerate the loco back to 20 scale mph or so, and count chuffs per revolution of the main crank.

Was wrong. 116 and others do work during P on the Main. ( actually, I wouldn't 'p on the main' if there's a 3rd rail !, uh ..). Last night I almost got a decent chuff rate by making all 28 steps increase by a value of 5, rendering top speed 28 to be value 135 (maybe 60-70 mph ). It worked out. But first time I crawled through a switch she (connie) stood still as chuffs accelerated. Then I messed with CV 10 trying various levels. But no help...
Crandell, I don't get you. Say 116 is at 22 or 122. I seem to have tried that; changing 116 up/down. It will be OK for say 25 revs (4 chuffs per). Then it starts going out, chuffs too soon or too late viewing side rod's 4 positions. This engine is so strange this way. Yet cheaper mogul syncs up real easy via 116; Cv 29 not even needed.

I think you and I are also finally getting dialled-in, Mark. :teeth: I didn't realize you are so a.nal. :cute: What I mean is, your standards appear to be too high. Even I can't keep my fourth chuff on the main crank's bottom dead center after about the 8th-10th wheel turn. With CV 116, it can only ever be a 90% solution, plus or minus 5%. The objective, since it's all a scale toy system anyway, is to get it close enough to be realistic. I know, realism is different for each of us, but unless you install a cam and reed, you are not going to get complete satisfaction setting CV 116. Take the best you can and play trains!!

Appreciated as always. but what gets me is my mogul (accidently reprogrammed her recently) gets perfectly in sync at about 99 or 100 on CV 116 , needing no other CV ajustments . But the connie is a real complexity this way. It seems to always want to sound way too many chuffs at roll off ,the activity I care more about than rolling along where it becomes a blur anyway..

Maybe you could imagine it a Super-Consolidation with a booster, or even Gresley Gear.

Yeah, yeah ! OK, but get this: I went home and attacked the problem again, finally got conny to an acceptable chuff rate, decided that it will never be perfect this side of a cam and closed the chapter on this ! I go over to the mogul which was sitting on the cold stub end track off a Shino power-routing T.O., along with an RS3..Their sound was off proving they're isolated from rest off RR. So, now I want to give one more teensy change to mogul chuff, CV 116 from 96 to about 102..This has always been this simple with this loco. I am flabbergasted ! I pick up mogul and re-rail it near PowerCab to program as is only loco on rest of powered layout ( Or so I thought). Now mogul is stuck with a code-2 trouble warning, blowing whistle and flashing light 2 times. I tried refresh by CV 30 to 2/off-on power. Relieved when she powered back up and flashed light 16 times. BUT, now headlight/no sound !! 3-4 more refreshes got light/no sound or sound/no light, code 2s.. !! Tsunami manual states the '2' code means it's a software problem and MUST go back to Bachmann !! I am going to go now to Bachmann website and see what I can derive from there. If anyone in Tboard knows a way out of this without shipping loco I would appreciate it deeply. I don't know why this has occurred now ! I did keep the Shino points isolating 2 other engines whilst first completing Conny !
