Can someone please help me? I'd like to know when these events took place (approximate dates or just the chronological order). Thanks!

    UP's buyout of SP
    BNSF merger
    SP's buyout of DRGW
    UP's swallowing of WP
    First Dash-9s delivered
    First SD90s delivered

Hey, It's "Who Wants to be a Trainboard Millionaire"!!! :D Although I don't know the answer for sure, I'm going to take a guess and hopefully I will get lucky and beat the other contestants. So here goes.....

    UP's swallowing of WP
    First Dash-9s delivered
    SP's buyout of DRGW
    First SD90s delivered
    BNSF merger
    UP's buyout of SP

    So how'd I do, Regis?

Sorry, just having a little fun! [IMG]

I reckon SP+DRGW was before UP got dash 9's....otherwise I reckon the same order as you Doug.

    Guesstimate dates: UP+WP was early 80's, SP+DRGW iirc was mid-late 80's, BNSF was mid 90's (96?), UP+SP after that (98?)

    (I am the weakest link.........goodbye)

    DRATS!!!

I think you are correct, Martyn. I missed the "fastest finger" question, although actually it was a TRICK question. (D&RGW actually bought SP) Anyway, I did some quick research and here is a summary of what I found. (still might not be 100% accurate, but that's why they call it a discussion, right?) I think my original reasoning was that SP/DRGW happened around 93 and that maybe the GE's Dash 9's beat it to the punch. Oh well!!!

    UP's swallowing of WP - 1982
SP's buyout of DRGW - 8/9/1988 (really DRGW's buyout of SP as a result of the failed SPSF merger, although DRGW/SP didn't officially merge operations until 1992)
    First Dash-9s delivered - 11/1993
    First SD90s delivered -1996
    BNSF merger- 1/1/1997
    UP's buyout of SP- 9/11/1997

    YIKES!

When I asked this question, I thought it would be a slam-dunk answer.

But I like the fact that it turned out to be fun! Thanks for the info, guys...AND the entertainment! [IMG]

That "Million Dollar" question might be a good post. Like, what would you do if you had a million bucks and it had to be spent on train-related items? (i.e. no giving it to charity or paying to have your boss whacked) I would probably just buy some N-scale brass SD70MAC's. I should be able to get 3 or 4 for that amount..... :D

Fund a *large* layout room (maybe aircraft hanger size) for our group to build a really fun to operate layout....

I'd kinda like to model the Santa Fe's Mississippi bridge at Fort Madison to half size or so, in HO (it's about a kilometre long on the prototype!!!) [IMG]

Throw in a few features of the eastern end of the Santa Fe, a representation of Corwith & KC to run between......

    Mmmmmmm
    Well that's my million spent.

anyone care to make a donation :D

1/1/97 is when the BNSF merger was officially
finalized. The merger took place 6/95.
I was hired by the BNSF in August of 96.
