I was looking at the recent release of Atlas 20,700 tank car. The saddles might need a little work but other than that it seems to be a good start. Any suggestions?
I saw one of those at Eola about 2005 or 2006 and they are quite impressive. Since then I have been giving some thought to using an MT 56' tank car as an analog for the CB&Q 62' tank car. I can suspend enough disbelief to overlook the missing 6 feet. That or just add in the missing section. With my building skills (or rather the lack thereof), I will probably just us the MT 56 footer. I hadn't seen the Atlas car but a quick look shows that it has a lot of potential as well. Ha!! You just sealed it! Now Atlas will do them in CB&Q, probably two road numbers too!! (Oh, wait, start work on one then... like magic...) Thanks dudes!!
The computer shows this type car to be a 60' blt 70', 27,500 gal and greater. Hope this helps. Is the atlas 25500 gal tank car too modern? dave t
Sounds like the Atlas model is longer than the MT model which would make it a good place to start. It appears that the frame and the railing around the dome would have to be modified as well as adding a walkway and handrail. Depending on the period, you would have to change the coupler. Then too, you could just take it as it is and but Burlington decals on it. Nice! I was on a scoot from Aurora to Chicago and saw it when we went through the yard at Eola. No chance for a picture, though. I think those are great cars and would be facinating to model. So much so that I bought a couple of Athearn's model in HO just for reference. Andy "Tetsu Uma"
It looks like all you need to do is stretch it out properly, add a frame, take out the bars that go from platform to platform(I can't think of the name of these bars) and replace with walkways, add a hand grab going all around the tank, rework the outlet pipes on the bottom, and rework the top ladder railings. Where could a person find out how long the tank itself is, if one attempts this...
If you don't mind working from the Athearn model, I'll try to find one of my HO models and measure it.
TetsumuUma- What were you doing on a Scoot going through Eola? <gggggg> Dinkies ran on the CB&Q....not Scoots!! Charlie Vlk
This is true you have me there. However, I was 3 when the "Q" merged into the BN and my commuting time was from 1999-2006. Calling F40-2PHMs or MP36s shoving Nippon Sharyo cars "dinkies" doesn't quite seem right to me. When I was commuting daily, they could have called them "dinkies," "scoots" or "Green Eggs and Ham;" just as long as it got my butt into the City in time for work. Andy "Tetsu Uma"
Andy- Can't disagree with you there..... as far as I am concerned, time stopped when "Menk the Fink" (I still have my button!!!) became president of the CB&Q. Even so, the CB&Q traditions lived on for a long time. The ex-Q people wouldn't even allow the Metra Milwaukee Road / Rock Island Budd cars on the property. Now, those things look like they're built like battleships compared to the junk they are running now. And if the BNSF people were running the show they'd use those tinfoil Bombardier cars.... apparently they don't think there is anything wrong with a car that can be shredded into small bits by an SUV on the tracks. I wonder if another Naperville wreck is required for the lesson to be learned again? Charlie Vlk
