My wife wants to know if she can sleep in the seat on a over night "coach" trip from Seattle to Sacramento? And does she need to carry on things like her blankie and favorite pillow

    Yes, and yes.

Sleeping in coach isn't bad, as long as you have a pair of seats to yourself, or at least are seated with someone you know. Never been seating with someone I didn't know, yet...

Amtrak provides pathetic little pillows, but not blankets. It's highly advisable to bring your own. Also might want to bring a sleeping mask or something (jacket, etc.) to cover your eyes while sleeping. Bright lights have a way of finding their way to you.

Most nights if there is a SL Lounge, just go there and sleep using one of the couches. There is nobody in there and the couches are quite comfy. Better then a seat. A game blanket, like the kind brought to sporting events does well for sleeping on Amtrak. Good dreams!
