I have a car with a broken Rapido coupler. I'd like to get a truck with a knuckle coupler to make a transition car out of it. The car is an Atlas. It looks like a Bettendorf truck with short coupler to me, but I'm not sure.

Just get a Micro Trains Bettendorf truck with short coupler and swap one truck out.

That's an Atlas first generation three dome tanker, catalog number 2296. If you want to keep the two trucks looking the same, you can replace the broken Rapido coupler with Micro Train couplers which, with the adapter included, will fit into the Rapido coupler pocket. Look in the Micro Trains coupler conversion guide, available online, to see which ones can be used. I know 1128's are one or 1104's, and there are others.

You could also cut the Rapido coupler pocket off the truck and body mount a Micro Trains coupler but, on some tankers it's a bit of work. I have done it on many of mine. Some require a pad to be made and mounted in between the walkway and tank on which to mount the coupler draft gear. I can't remember if this particular car is like that or if there is already a pad there.

I always go for just replacing the coupler instead of the whole truck because it bugs me to have two dissimilar trucks on one car.

OK, looking closer at your pictures, there is already a pad so it's then just a matter of shimming, if needed, to get the coupler to the right height.
