Although the entire ex-SP line between Bakersfield, CA and Mojave, CA is loaded with great railfan spots, my choice for favorite is the area around Caliente. Caliente is easy to find, and has a multitude of photographic angles. If you aren't shooting photos, just standing near the post office and watching a train wrap itself around you on the horseshoe curve is an impressive sight. In this photo, the train is an eastbound approaching the horseshoe curve. The train will reappear minutes later on the hillside tracks visible above the locomotives.
