Caboose railing paint?

    Approximately when did US railroads begin applying white paint on caboose railings and some grab irons?

    Not aware of White being a standard. A contrasting color to make them easier to see.

    Right. I also doubt it was a standard. But a whole bunch of companies did it. I just don't have enough photographic evidence. For instance, I was looking at the Hickcox GN color freight car book. Those few photos I could spot, looked as though possibly early 1960's. But not enough views to get close. I did the same for a couple of other companies as well, but....

    I'm looking at a freelance caboose project, where I need to decide if these would be appropriate. That chosen era is post-WWII, but pre-1960. Painted the same color as the car body, the railings blend in as if just cheaply molded on. Rather disappointing.

    The Southern Pacific started to paint them white in 1948, along with the curved corner grabs
