The cab windows on the C44-9WL locomotives (the two window versions) appear to be similar to the windows used on EMD wide nose locomotives in the SD60M, SD70M, SD80&SD90 locomotives. Are they the same or is the size unique to the C44-9WL?
Two-window C44-9WLs? I thought C44-9WL only referred to the units with the Canadian safety cab, and thus 4 front windows.
There are some C44-9WLs that have two windows, like JKD is talking about. The windows have an angled corner that is different from standard, rectangular GE windows. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=177543 I would say they are not the same size, although as JKD said, very similar. An SD70I: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=180735 If you look examine closely, you can see the differences. -The angled part on the EMD window begins closer to the center of the window. -The outside edge of the EMD window is taller in relation to the rectangular part of the window.
Not a C44-9WL... as Triplex mentioned, C44-9WLs have the Canadian saftey cab, built for CN and BC Rail. They're nicknamed 'teardrop' or 'porkchop' windows...
Everything I've read classes the 2 window version of the GE loco with two teardrop windows ordered by BC Rail and CN as C44-9WL. There were two orders. One order has 4 windows, the other 2. If they're not C44-9WL, what are they? I see the difference now. :teeth:
It's clear that the user selects all information. Thus, misidentifications of locos are frequent. C44-9W/C44-9WL confusion is one of the most common errors I've seen. Mixing up F-units is also common.
