So I was in Portland today and was trying to find the 4449 to show my son. I went down by Brooklyn and my dad and I could see the top of the Roundhouse but for the life of us we could not figure out how to get into the roundhouse anymore. We found the access road that we used to use to get to the roundhouse, but it no longer is able to access the roundhouse anymore. So we went down to the overpass (dont know the street name) just south of the roundhouse and could not find an access there either. Now it has been probably 15 years since I have been down there at least. Has UP completely locked down this area from public access recently?

I didn't know that UP ever allowed people access to the roundhouse unless they were with the engines. In other words, you can't do that unless someone brings you there.

Well the last time I was in there was shortly after the UP/SP merger. We drove right in with no signs posted anywhere about No Trespassing. When we got the the roundhouse they welcomed us in with open arms. There was a donation basket just inside the door. The 4449 was painted in the AFT colors and Doyle was working on wiring on the PA-1.
As a long time railfan, I don't believe in trespassing. However, if there is access to an area, I will ALWAYS ask permission if signs are posted before taking photos and/or doing any type of snooping around.

Well it hasn't been like that for some time. Doubly so since they are kicking the engines out soon.

My sister-in-law lives within walking distance of the roundhouse. When I visit my son and I have captured these photos from the bridge on SE Holgate Blvd. The area is pretty much boxed in by U.P.

That is kind of what I suspected.
