Bracing for Open-Sided Structures

    I wanted to print my tender cistern and frame separately so they can be separated to install stuff. Experience printing the engine cab, as well as watching others struggle with wavy walls, wanted to avoid that here.

    With the cab I just combined it with the cab floor and the two supported each other nicely. Didn't want to put in a full floor and have to figure out how to drain and cure the interior. What I came up with are spaced braces, shaped to not require supports:

    The brace is the same object, scaled to fit the particular gap. The concave edges are specifically for the cistern wings, they don't present a straight edge so don't require supports. On the big one, it lets resin flow out the cavity as well as provide easy access for curing illumination. They're meant to be cut out, I set them in a bit so it would easier to see the cut line.

    Tilting at 45 degrees puts all the walls on a diagonal, minimizes the number of "new" edges or faces to the printer's FEP. If the braces didn't have curved edges, they'd need some kind of support; the curved edge allows incremental support from adjacent pixels.

    Nice, straight walls all the way down to the opening.

    I'm becoming a fan of modeled supports...

    That print turned out clean. Instinctively I would have put a support smack in the middle of that big brace near the back, but based on your results that wouldn't have been necessary. How did the "rolled edge" at the rear/top turn out? From the drawing it looks like there may be potential for overhang? Sometimes I try to mitigate that with tiny horizontal connectors but other times I just print it and see how it goes (and they turn out fine.) I'm also a fan of modeled supports. (y)
