Never posted to this group before but will try a practice run with a couple low quality photos. The two images show the last miles of a set of boxcabs motors which included the E23 streamlined cab unit. My dad and I were traveling down the West Valley highway near Sumner, WA and unexpectedly met this freight containing the dead boxcabs. The train was westbound and I quickly caught this image out the window of our moving car. The second closeup image was captured after the train stopped briefly at Sumner for an eastbound. You will have to excuse the quality, as the camera was a cheap Kodak Instamatic, in the hands of a low rent photographer. The photos were scanned from a print, with a great deal of color shift. A few minutes in photoshop at least made them presentable. The prints were dated Oct.72 but I do not know the actual date they were exposed. Kevin
steady_rest: Welcome to TrainBoard! And our Milw Forum! A sad sight. But glad you captured them. Anything beats nothing! I've been spending some time this evening, trying to sharpen some of my poorer photos. Have been surprised that a few came out well. And brought forth many memories. Boxcab E50
Kevin, welcome to Trainboard, and thanks for that history. The title of your message got my heart beating, as BOXCAB is one of our administrators here and a very active participant. When I saw "Boxcab" and "funeral" together, well wow. I see Boxcab was the first to respond, so obviously the funeral part doesn't apply. Gosh, I've had too much eggnog. Merry Christmas. :teeth:
Thanks to all of you for the welcome. I have enjoyed reading this forum for quite some time and then later joined to view the photos. My absolute earliest railroad experience, was the day my dad hoisted me up into the cab of a Milwaukee Road steam engine. The engine was in a long line of locomotives that were parked at Van Asselt (South Seattle), waiting for the trip to the scrapper. I was 3 to 4 years old but it was one of those few early life experiences that remained forever sharp in memory. Thank you again, you have provided good information and entertainment.
A lot of us have some sort of similar childhood memory. Amazing how those stick with you. Hope you have a few more to share! Boxcab E50
For a minute there I though Ken had frozen solid on the way to the mailbox...... Nice photos. Neil Young said it best, "Rust never sleeps".
