I've always modelled in N scale but to be honest with myself I have very little interest in operations and just like the model building aspect of the hobby. So I'm planning on switching to HO scale for the broader range of craftsman kits and details and want to start with a few box car/reefer kits. Are there any manufactures that sell high quality cars in kit form that will come with the likes of metal grab irons or photo etch detail parts? Lots come pre-built like this but I would prefer to build them myself. I'm planning on just buying a single DCC w/sound steam engine and keeping the cars and buildings consistent with this era. Thank-you!

Look on Ebay for Proto2000 , Red Caboose and Intermountain kits . None of them have metal wheels though . Mike

You can buy the Tangent and Exactrail Kits for as long as they are in stock, some go quickly and then you have to wait for a rerun.

Atlas, now does their kits and the old Branchline kits, but you have to see when they announce them and place an order with someone who handles Atlas, the large online stores do not ever list these when they do pre-orders since according to them no one buys them.

There are also a number of resin kit manufacturers like Westerfield, F&C and others. Also there are now some of the 3D printing companies that are coming out with kits, I just got one for a well flat.
