BNSF Derailment South of Socorro, NM

    BNSF-El Paso to Belen Freight Train derailed just outside of Socorro, NM.
    No one was injured


    SOCORRO, N.M.--A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, heading from El Paso to Belen, derailed around 6:40 a.m., just outside of Socorro, according to Joe Faust of the BNSF Railroad. There were no injuries in the derailment.

    About 19 cars derailed. Some are still lying on their side while some cars are still upright.

    There was a two fuel-oil cars that broke during the derailment. Officials are concerned from its proximity to the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge. They are sending an environmental remediation team. Officials did make a makeshift dirt dam to contain the oil; however, officials did mention that some oil did get in the wetlands.
