I saw this unit switching the main yard in Spokane today, and I had thought I had seen all of the one off BN paint jobs but this one is new to me, is it the only one or were there more like it? http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/SD40/6318B.HTM Thanks, Kevin Mumaw
How about this one? BN Phot Archives: Also look closely at the middle unit in this consist, on Mike Danneman's N layout:
Hmmm, I think I saw BN 6368 recently, wait, I saw it running on my layout this afternoon! Which SD40-2 has the SD45 long hood? I think that one would be fun to have also... Kevin D Mumaw
Which ones, you mean? BN 7023: (BN Photo Archives) BN 6330: (rebuilt SD40, BN Photo Archives) 7023 actually wandered into Cheyenne last year:
More oddballs! BN 8075 was built in Canada, and received a black-painted sill: (BN P A More SD45 hoods? You bet! BN 7149 and 7890 both converted to burn LNG, received SD45 radiators about 1991. The best resource for these is Diesel Era' July/Aug-Nov/Dec 04. These back issues are MUST have's for BN nuts. [ October 24, 2005, 07:51 PM: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]
Don't forget about the 8002--the only SD40-2 with Tigerstripes! When you have 838 SD40-2's, you are bound to have several differences. Not counting the Geeps, there are also a few oddballs there. Any questions, Charlie Biel's site is your single best resource for doing prototype homework: http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/ROSTER.HTM
Ok, I asked the question I was just wondering about BNSF 6324, I knew about most of the others but I was wondering if 6324 was the only one done in that way. I love the pictures this tread has generated, I have 7 SD40-2's and need another 3 for my master plan, I have to keep myself to one oddball unit and it is so hard to choose. Kevin
I took a factory Kato early SD40-2 in BN paint (I had 2 with the same #'s), stripped the nose striping off with 91% alky/Q-tip, and redecaled for the 6368 (all I had to do was decal an 8 over the 3--no lettering removal necessary), and a BN logo on the nose. It was very simple, easier than Whiteface painting a cab, and reassembling with new BN 6318) numbers. I guess I got carried away, sorry about that. As far as I know, there were no other oddball one-offs, save for the ones mentioned above.
This is excellent Hemi,I'm painting a bunch of BN stuff right now & have already found 1 mistake on my part. #8075 is an SD40-2 yes?
Indeed, Jason. I would likely have never seen the black sill.... The ones GM built in their Canadian shops were slightly different. The reinforcing ribs on the traction motor blower duct are missing, the numberboard is not lettered in white, but rather in black on a white background. The black sill is also a dead givaway.
