Engines have had tapes (or what you are saying is the black box) on them for quite some time. They are now done digitally onto cards then to computers. The video recorder is mounted in the engineers side of the window and is on a 24 hour loop we are told. It basically records and shows if the bell is being rung, horn being sounded, speed, and I can't remember what else if anything. They have become very handy at court hearings and things like that. We have had them on NS units for a while now. They are being retro fitted to the older units that don't come with them from the factory. It is very nice to see what stupidity lurks in the real world. I haven't seen one lie yet and we get to see them every year.
