This got started on the Santa Fe Forum. It's about walkway colors. I now know that SF Yellowbonnets have blue walkways and I'm in the process of painting my N-Scale YB's and now I need to know about my BN power. Are the walkways green or black? Does it depend on the unit? Anyone have any "Top-side" photos of BN and SF units? I'm also detailing and need photos that show locations of the annteni, beacons, and air conditioners. HELP!

    Brent,

Go to Rick's Train Server. There are tons of BN (and other) pics. Just quickly looking at the first couple of pages of the "bn" section, I haven't noticed any overhead shots. But that doesn't mean they aren't there.

Early on i think BN had (some) green walkways but i'm pretty sure they all are black now...

I think i recall some pics of U30Cs with green.

Thanks for the info guys. I just checked all my BN locos and yes, I got a lot of walkways to repaint. [IMG]

I think that most of the walkways on BN locos were black, but the Atlas SD60M's had green walkways so those might have been green.

I think it can vary from unit to unit; was looking at some books, and walkway-level pics of a BN SD40-2 I shot at Fullerton awhile back, and some units show green walkways. I think it all depends when and where the unit was painted.

I'm really suprised that some of the units still have the green walkways. I figured the black was an anti-skid paint. So I pulled out a Microscale BN loco set (87-549) and on the paint diagrams the walkways are listed as "Black Mortell Enamel 3009 Non-Skid". I was looking through BN photos and could only guess at a couple of pics that might have green walkways because of the paint color of the units and the early 80s dates. I couldn't find any of pics of the SD60s on my hard drive, but i didn't see any SD60Ms that appeared to have green either. Also, remember that Northtown photo? Check that out.

I too was under the impression they were painted black from new. This is from the similar sources as others have mentioned so far.
Have you checked Charles Biel's site? - http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/

Check out the high shots of the following SD40-2 units - 6777 (looks greenish but I think that is wear of the black non-skid coating), 6380b, 6845,7066, 7072, 7829, 8070.
All 'look' as though they have black walkways (though some are quite coal weathered). Checking ther SD60M's found not too many high shots and these were in conclusive as to the walway colour. One (9921) definitely showed the front porch black but the walkways looked green!
With your photos, Paul, there's nothing like a diversion from the 'normal' paint scheme to upset the boat, eh? [IMG]

Welcome back Gary [IMG] I have noticed that at heavily walked-on areas, the black paint wears away to show the main paint colour, on several different roads, including CSX and CR. I was checking those on the net, for a friend who was painting some.

I think this can fool some people, if they just see the worn area.

    Thanks, Alan [IMG]
The weathered effect appears to affect the sides of the walkways moreso than the centreline where the walking is done. I suspect this is the action of years of sand dust etching the surface on the outside edge and the effects of gathered dust swirling at the bottom of the body affecting the inside.

Good topic, Brent. I have always painted my BN walkways black (when needed). Scott's reply certainly has me thinking about the latter SD40-2's that we expect to arrive soon [IMG]
