DALHART, TX - On our trip from Alamosa to Dalhart we parallelled the former BN line from about Des Moines all the way in here.

In several locations I noticed signs alon the track that read "Signal Overlap".

Since I never heard of this on the former ATSF lines I'm guessing this must be a former BN thing?

Anybody with an explanation or does it mean what I think?

There are some of these sign's like that on the Oregon Trunk. On the trunk (Which is ABS) it means the singnal bonds are farther back from the signal then normal and if you pull past that it will trip the block in the oppisit direction even though you you did not pass the block. Hope that helps, I will try and get a more offical reason later.

Here is the rule on overlap circuits from the GCOR.

    9.21 Overlap Circuits

Overlaps may be identified by overlap signs. A train on the main track at a meeting point must not pass an overlap sign location or a open switch within the overlap until the opposing train has entered the block.

A preceding train must clear the overlap as soon as possible to avoid delaying a following train.

Unless otheriwse instructed by the train dispatcher, a train on a siding at a meeting or passing point must not pass an overlap sign location until authorized to leave the siding.

Well there it is, hope it anwsers your question Wig-wag.
