What happened to these units? Still in coal service or elsewhere on the northern lines? The OKY SD60s have gone into general service on the transcon but I have not seen the BN units.
The BNs SD60s were actually EMD owned demo units (the orignal SD60 demos were sold to CR)... they went into EMDXs lease fleet after 2 years on BN and were part of the LLPX/CSX transaction a few years ago. They are now CSX 8787,8788, and 8789. Of interest, these are the only SD60s built with ratchet handbrakes...
Becuase they were EMD owned demonstrators leased to BN... the Oakway SD60 deal was brokered when these were still on lease to BN.
one was wrecked but I saw one in Alliance shops last year, they were upgraded I was told by the shop guys to the same as any other SD70.
Last pictures I saw of them - how many years ago were they? - they weren't on BN, but as test units somewhere still in the green and white.
Retired off of BNs roster in 08/1992. They became part of EMDs internal test fleet, they're all at TTCI.
Did you mean 1998? The SD60MAC's were still in service through 1998 on BNSF. The BNSF Photo Archives site shows them retired in June/July of 1998.
I think we are confusing the 9500 with the 8300's. I saw 9501 last year at Alliance or Denver BUT it might have run it up there for some repairs?
The SD60's (8300-8302) were built to BN Specifications. They featured: Ratchet Handbrakes Standard HTC Trucks (before using visible roller bearings) Two Fuel Fillers Angular Anticlimbers S3K Horn on the dustbin hatch Amber rotary beacons When the lease expired, the SD60's wound up in lease service to SOO and then were repainted years later into the Maroon, Grey, Silver, Black, & White scheme. A while later, the SD60's were sold to CSX
