I was under the impression that BN only painted one SD40 in the orange high visibilty scheme, but it seems to me it was a SD40-2, not a SD40. I have been known to be wrong though, but not very often [IMG].

Ed, I'm with Kevin on this. The only SD40-type I can recall to get the orange face scheme was 8002, a SD40-2. Also the 3 SD60 demo units got the same scheme.

In summary, it was a GP50 only scheme. After 4 years ('89) a cost analysis was done on the benefits of 'tiger stripes' - the 50's ended up in the booth getting 'white faced' (BN wasn't really happy with the look anyway).

Well I went searching and found out some more info, it is a SD40-2 (8002) and as of march 21 1997 it is in whiteface with the BURLIGTON NORTHERN spelled out accorss the long hood.

Well I cant get the pic to work but if you cop and paste the URL it will give ya the pic and at the bottom of the pic there are some more photos of the engine in whit face and in ornge stripes.

Ed, i far as i know, there are no SD40`s repainted. There are however units of both predessor roads that have been renumbered and restenciled with BNSF on the battery box doors. Acording to the 1998 - 1999 BNSF motive power review by Robert Del Grosso on pg. 129 he states that former BN unit 6304 now BNSF 6319 may be painted. I am unsure of just what he is indicating so here is his stats, you decide. Titled = REN BNSF AT PAINTED. 09/25/98 VMV YES. I hope this helps

Update Ed. In the newest BNSF review by DelGrosso pics of SD40`s in Heritage I appear. Ex ATSF SD40u 6312 and ex C&S SD40 6367 on page 95. His paint data states that units 6311 and 6319 have also been repainted. U may find pics of these units on Q-Station.

BNSF 6199 is an SD40-3 in pumpkin colors and is a "modified" switcher here used on the hump (disliked by hump crews), used as a switch engine in the yard (detested by yard crews). Now if they'd only us it as a local-forgot only 4 axles can be utilized in indusrty opps, humm now what do we do with it, we park it behind the hump and use it mu-d with a switch engine to do yard transfer jobs.

Ed, the only Units to be in Tiger Stripe Scheme were SD40-2 8002, SD60s Demonstrators and the GP50s.

What was interesting was that the SD60 Demos went back to EMD after their lease and went to SOO LINE. All they did was white out the BN Logo on the long hood and cabs. They were still in Tiger scheme years after they left BN rails. After a stint on SOO LINE they showed up on SP rails still in their green and white. After that they came back to "home rails" for a short stint and after that I do not know. I lost track after that. Happy Railroadin'
