Piggy-backing on Alan's thead title... Backdrop installed, benchewok completed, ready to paint backdrop before laying track. [ 27. May 2003, 00:31: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]
A few questions- Are those foam board layers each 2" in thickness? And, are they on a solid base of plywood or OSB? Also , how did you attach the foam? Hot glue? White or yellow glue? Boxcab E50
2" foam each layer, laid atop 1/2" OSB/ 1x4 frames. Glued with Latex Liquid Nails. Same stuff I use for track and roadbed.
The backdrop is semi-finished, and the liftout is built. Look for more pix here soon! Tracklaying will commence as soon as I get a brige built over the liftout area. I can hardly wait!!!!!
Borrowing on other's experience, I decided to not make my liftout hinged. I just didn't want the hassle. I ended up building it with red oak, for structual rigidity, and dimensional stability, with a Vee-block mount on both ends, to positively center the whole works, and to provide a breakaway feature if bumped. It holds very nicely, and breaks loose just as easy. Motre pics to come soon. Below is attached a diagram of the end of my liftout, the Vee-block system I used.
Will you be wiring, or adding some sort of safety system on either side of the lift out? Something that would kill power, or physically prevent a train from getting close to "the big drop," when the bridge is not installed? If so, am curious as to what you have in mind? Also, is there any actual difference between the pink and blue foam boards? Boxcab E50 [ 14. June 2003, 19:44: Message edited by: BoxcabE50 ]
I am adding a microswitch that will kill power to *the whole layout* the power supply to the DCC booster when the liftout is raised. Sure the trains will stop abruptly, but it sure beats a 4' drop! Pink vs. blue foam? None that I'm aware of. Some places just have pink, or blue. The blue just happened to be the ONLY 2" stuff in the city at the time!
Looks really great. Can't wait to see more pictures. Jeff Augsburg & Concord R.R. (a fictional shortline in Central Illinois) http://www.pegnsean.net/~revnjeff
Ask, and ye shall receive! But it'll have to wait till tomorrow... The benchwork corners are installed, the liftout is complete, and the mainline roadbed is complete. Tomorrow, tracklaying!!!!!!!
pink is a owens corning product, you know the pink panther, the blue, when building homes in georgia was manufactured by Amaco( sp?) the oil magnate. I could go into the R factors but that is not important to use MR's. My self I am planning on use birch 3/4" for everything, I accquired 30 sheets, , and I have access to a complete wood shop with three table saws, so I can do set up fer each stage of the operation. Adios for now,,Wyatt
You asked, I'm deliverin'! I have track laid!!! Just a few feet, but enough to display my newest RC 73' centerbeams in BN... All track has been painted, even turnouts, with points areas masked off... I think it looks realistic, and will look a ton better when the ballast is installed. The train is rolling over the area that will be that huge fill close to Athol, ID on the Funnel line. Just behind it will be the source for all the material in the fill, a huge cut close to Granite Lake, ID. This is a prototypical location on the Funnel line. These shots are from the doorway, about where the liftout will go.
How much do you pay for your 2" foam board? I checked today. Found a local supplier who has the blue stuff. At $22.00 a sheet! OUCH!!!!! Boxcab E50
Up in Minot, ND, I paid 17 for a sheet. Down here, a whoppin' 25 bucks a sheet!!!! But it's worth it.
