Has anyone had any experience with blue foam? I am thinking of laying 2" blue foam board on 5/8 plywood for my layout base. That way I could contour some creeks etc.

Yup,in fact I'm on my third layout using blueboard.

Need a good place to get it? The Meynards supper store on Clyde Park s.w. usually has a large varieity of thicknesses at all times(ain't always blue though :D )

Probably Riders on 28th, however most of my purchases are either over e-bay or from a internet hobby shop.

I haven't tried laying track on a blue board base more than once, though I have used it (or pink board) for building scenery. I highly recommend it! It's a lot easier to clean up than plaster. The single time I used styrofoam for a layout base was for a class I taught on building a railroad. We used the Woodland Scenics Subterrain materials for risers and inclines. It works pretty well, but you want to be really careful when you lay out any risers, roadbed, etc., since it's kinda hard to make changes once the glue dries. I made one mistake when laying out the inclines, and we have to go back and rip them out to get the grades right. Oh, well, chalk up another learning experience.

The model RR I have is built with 2" blue foam on a 1/2" flakeboard base. I haven't tried to have a RR with just the foam base, but I like the way I can punch holes thru the foam w/o using a drill (great when it's time for wiring). And to top it off, I have Woodland Scenics foam roadbed upon which I lay my track. No noise problems from what I can tell.

AKRRnut, a sheet of foam with a RR on it may serve your purposes if you have an issue with space. Just stack it to one side when not in use, and as light as it is, a foam-based RR is easily handled.

    Just a thought.....

Thanks for the info AKRRnut. What kind of glue were you using? By the way; my son is a big game guide around the Mcgrath area. Anywhere near you?
