C-WW In the past, I have always painted my track with browns and black prior to ballasting using an airbrush or spray cans. I usually mask the points of the switches before painting and then clean the paint off with a bright boy afterward. Unfortunately, it seems to never runs as well afterward, especially the turnouts. I am thinking about brush painting the ties and using Blacken-It to stain the rail using a brush. It conducts electricity and I am thinking it might look good will interfering with performance less. I've used Blacken it before. The only problem with using it is that the rails must be very clean. Otherwise the blackening solution leavs a shiny spot.......Mike [This message has been edited by Mike C (edited 21 January 2001).]
I somehow ended up with GREEN rails with Blacken-it ! What went wrong there Russ [This message has been edited by tehachapifan (edited 22 January 2001).]
I have not tried this, so I will pass it along as a rumor only. I have been told by a club member that he used Tarn-Ex (silver, copper and brass) tarnish remover to preclean rail, rinse in clean water, then use Blacken-It, and got the satin black we get on Machinery. I am not going to risk it on track already down, but when I get to it, I might try it, since I do have a long narrow plastic tray that a full section of flex could lay flat in. It is the clean rail metal that makes the difference. Someone want to try a short section and report back to us how it came out? ------------------ Watash #982 "See you in the Pit"
Watash & Russ I have used 'blacken-it' on brass detail parts and if you don't clean them they can turn pretty colors due to the oxides & dirt on the part. A friend from our club states he cleans his parts with MEK!! I think this is overkill, besides you don't want to breathe the fumes unless you want a career a a vegitable! I clean the parts in alcohal, (Jim Beam, Jack Danaels, whichever ), then put them in the blackener. The company that makes 'blacken-it' also makes 'weather-it' which produces a rusty effect which would be interesting to see used on the rails. 2slim
Can one of you fellas post the name of the company that makes "blacken it" (sp?). Sounds interesting! Thanks, ------------------ When in doubt, empty your magazine. Member #33
