I must admit, while I am mainly an ATSF guy, I do like to model SP as well.

One of my favorite schemes is the SP Black Widow. I have numerous F3 and F7 units, as well as two custom painted E8's with the proper numbers.

So now I turn my attention to the Alco's. I have several undec units that I would like to paint in the same scheme. Did SP ever paint PA's in this scheme?

If so, where would I find the road numbers?

    Thanks!

I don't think so. The pictures I've seen and memories... had them in the Daylight Colors and the Bloody Nose. No Black Widows that I'ma aware of.

Here is a resource I rely on heavily: http://espee.railfan.net/1966rost.html

    Focusing on PA's: http://espee.railfan.net/sppa.html

Would you believe one PA B unit in a black halloween paint scheme? That would make a consist look interesting on anyone's N scale layout.

Wondering if Kenneth A., or Russell S., has anything interesting or odd they could share here.

    I hope this helps.

As far as I know they never painted any in Black Widow. They started out in Daylight paint and then to Bloody Nose. I believe one got the "Holloween" scheme for a while.

I have an A-B-A set of Con Cor PA/PBs that do look kind of sharp.

there were a pair of E's in Black Widow...
6048 and 6050 received full Black Widow paint in 1958, but only wore it for a short time.
6048 also received an F7 nose in 1967, complete with F7 numberboards. 6051 was painted in the Halloween paint - this likely didn't last very long at all...

    as for PA's...
    Halloween:
    • PA2 6039 received orange and black paint in the bow wave scheme,
    • PA2 6024 also got the orange and black, but the orange was the exact shape the later red wings would be,
    • PB2 5922 received solid black,
    Half Widows
    • 6034 was painted in the Bloody Nose scheme but with black instead of gray

I am still going to have them painted in Black Widow because I think that will be an interesting look. I am more strict about ATSF, but can play games and schemes with all other roads.

I have the 2 E9's already, and I was never a fan of the Pumpkin scheme. The half widows are not all the interesting either.

I have a Daylight and Black Widow scheme painted on a pair of SD70M's, and they are pretty cool!

I was under the impression the Black Widow was freight only, like the Santa Fe's blue and yellow schemes. The PA/PB wasn't a bad dual service engine by any standard, but I never heard of dual service engines getting freight paint on any road in that era.

All the passenger, freight and dual service F units on the SP were delivered in Black Widow. Here is the Imperial, train #39, stopping to pick up my kindergarten class on a field trip in 1958.

Here is the Con Cor rendering of what they may have looked like had SP ever applied the paint scheme to them. Truck mounted pilots and all.
