    Does anyone have pictures or know of a website with pictures of the EMD BL20, BN leased all 3 for a while in the late 80's or early 90's.

    Thank you for the link. The BN photo archive is the first place i looked and I did not see BL20-2. I just went back and still can not find them, where in the archives did you find this?

    Kevin, the archive is divided by builder. If you delete whatever comes after the builder (EMD, GE, etc.) you get to the index directory. This is the default if there is no /index.html page.
    Example - got to http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDRBLD/SD40P/INDEX.HTM then delete the SD40P/INDEX.HTM and enter. That shows the index directory for the BN/EMDRBLD folder of the server.

    When I first saw this post, my first reaction was ... "Huh?" I was thinking of the old BL2, that funny looking flop... perhaps the "Edsil" of locomotives, so ugly you just have to love them.

    I first saw one in MR on a Monon layout. I saw this post and had to look and see if BN was running them (not realizing it was a rebuilt gp9). Why would EMD name them BL, that stands for "branch line", or at least the original BL2 was a "branch line 2", creating a smaller locomotive for use on short lines and branch lines.

    I found it using Google. That is one powerful search engine for pulling text out of pages... When i found it, i did notice the server locations were different from what i remember and i didn't think he had any BL20s before either! [​IMG]

    I was looking at the pic of the BL the other day and it sure looked like a neat little unit. It was like a real short GP60... I wonder how good it really was.

    I remember the artical, didnt he use a GP18 for the frame? and parts from a GP38 and a cannon kit? Do you remeber which issue it is in?

    Gary, I hear you on that one. It will be nice to see when it is completed. I am running into some problems with my SD28 , as it has come down to a comprimise. Leave the unit like the C&G units (701/702) which is what it is now, or cut some more and place large filter box directly behind the front grill work, which is what the IC ended up doing. Trade off on the C&G units is that the fuel tank is extremely small and would require much more frame work than I would like, but on the other hand where do I find a better non DB hatch with a paper filter? Have a look at the following and any suggestions may prove helpful:

    Hmmm....that air filter hatch looks pretty short, almost like it's an oil-bath filter (kinda hard to tell in the pic). If that's the case, and we're talking HO, you might be able to modify the Cannon 35-line turbo stack and use it. Otherwise, how about using the Athearn GP38-2 non/db hatch and paper filter box?

    Being Jason, it's N T-man, but you are on the right track (if only we had a Cannon & Co. in N!).

    An Atlas GP35 would be a good donor for the non-d/b hatch. Remove the stack and build up the air filter with styrene and pop it in when happy. The only other that would be a ringer for the paper air-filter would be the old Kato GP38-2, but these all had dynamics and the bodies are like hen's teeth (thank you Atlas for far-sightedness). Come to think of it, there has been a lack of models with paper air-filters. Maybe we DO need a GP38-2 in N? [​IMG]

    What is the basis of the SD28?. Looks like a SD35 would be the starting point. Are the SD35's available in non-d/b? I'd have to pull mine apart to look at the chassis, but it shouldn't be too much a problem to modify the chassis to re-create the C&G unit. That is a massive gap - you could hold a party under there! [​IMG]

    Gary and All of those interested in the SD28,
    The basis of the SD28 is externally the same as the SD35, as it was the predecessor to the 35. They share the same carbody and only differ in fan configuration, the 35 having 3 48" and the 28 having 2 48". Now comes the problem, what to do about the filter and DBs? I have taken the SD35 carbody and removed the DBs and now have to figure out how to model the filter, I was thinking of using styrene as the basis as it is like Gary said, the Kato GP38 is the only model to use the large filter, but these are rare and the way to go about cutting the body might lead to further problems. But aside from that, the C&G does not fit the era I model, however the IC unit does. Also the larger fuel tank on the IC unit negates all the frame work, so to wrap it up looks as if the unit will become the IC unit and I will have to use the styrene as a stand in filter. [​IMG] Only if we had a Cannon or RPP in N scale. And just so Alan does not move this into another forum, it was noted as of 1998, IC 9450 was sent to NREX and then leased out to BNSF.     Yes only 6 built. 4 for RMNX or Reserve Mining and 2 for C&G, which were absorbed by the IC. You just have to love the Paducah Shops huh??? Sure makes it tough on us modelers in 1:160, but hey I need a challenge and the SD28 fits the bill (sometimes a little too well [​IMG] ) Have a good one, Justin May
