The last I'd heard about the B&ML, a few years ago, it was for sale. Guess this was the result? I wonder if all the freight revenue is gone? It had been a common carrier company. If they are now a tourist only operation, their future may be in grave doubt. Boxcab E50
Sorry to hear the B & M is having the same trouble as the Yreka Western. I agree .. the B & M is part of the areas' history, and should be a part of the areas' future. I rode the B & M in 1992 and it was a wonderful ride through some beautiful country.
Can't the State of Maine step in and buy it in the name of Historic Preservation? West Virginia did that and now controls four. 3 of which were saved from removal from the face of the earth.
Didn't the Lamoille Valley also suffer this fate- disappearance of freight traffic, tenuous existence carrying passengers? IIRC, LVRC filed to abandon their entire route, the onetime line of the St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County.
Bob- Essentially that's what happened. I believe the rails may already be gone? Hope someone preserved that covered bridge? Boxcab E50
WV owns Cass and South Branch Valley (freight and passenger). They also assist in funding for Durbin & Greenbrier which runs the West Virginia Central. The eventual plan is to get The WVC/ D&G to re-connect directly into Cass. There is a temporary connection but curves are far too sharp for normal passenger cars.
Is that the section of track that was washed out at one time? Ex-C&O? Or am I thinking of another nearby segment? Boxcab E50
I just wrote a thesis about Railstar and there dealing with the Georetown Loop(Internal Server error 500 victim). If they can;t handle 3500 passengers, how are they going to handle 130,000 passengers - ridership for the Loop in 2004. Read more about it here save the train Eric [ 13. Is that the section of track that was washed out at one time? Ex-C&O? Or am I thinking of another nearby segment? Boxcab E50 </font>[/QUOTE]yes that is correct. Actually most washouts occurred in 1996, CSX just found no reason to fill those in since they had no use for the line that far south,
Eric- Interesting web site. I see a lot of frustration there. That seems well justified. It's sad to see the Loop come to this point. I sure hope there will somehow be a positive conclusion. Boxcab E50
