Surfing the net, I came across a post on the New England rail forums at Railroad.net stating that the plaque at the East Portal of the Hoosac Tunnel was stolen recently. Please be on the lookout for any info on where it might have gone and who took it. This plaque is important bacause it commemorates the first Railfan excursion ever ran. It ran to the tunnel then over the HT&W. Any help would be greatly appreaciated
Railfan and Dodge man, eh? Does my handle need any expanation?? Welcome aboard!!! Where is Hoosac Tunnel, anyways?
The Hoosac tunnel is on the B&M (now Guilford) and is located in western Mass. The west portal is in North Adams. It is 4 3/4 miles long and has a central shaft up to the top of the mountain approximately 1300 feet. There is a fan house with two 50 HP electric fans to suck the fumes out of the tunnel.
