    Security guard killed

    By TAMMY J. SCHOLL/Staff Writer

BARSTOW — A security guard may have been the victim of a random shooting when he was fatally wounded Sunday by a single bullet fired from about 400 yards away, police said.

Donald D. DeBoe, 62, of Apple Valley, was working as a contract security guard at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway yard — southeast of the Harvey House — about 11:30 p.m. A single bullet from a .22-caliber rifle hit him in the upper left chest, according to San Bernardino County coroner’s officials and police.

“The gunshot was fired about 400 yards away from where he was hit,” Barstow Police spokesman Mike Hunter said. “We are not sure at this point, but it seems like this was maybe a random shooting.”

Hunter said they found about 15 spent shell casing at the location, near Cottage and Third streets. This indicates the suspects were “shooting from this location for some time,” Hunter said.

Hunter said Cartrell Smith, 19, and Matthew Barnes, 18, were arrested Monday on suspicion of murder in connection with the shooting.

DeBoe drove himself to Starlight Donuts on West Main Street at First Avenue after he was shot.

“He was talking and coherent,” Hunter said. “Paramedics thought the injury could be life threatening, and he was airlifted to Arrowhead.”

DeBoe died while undergoing surgery at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center at 5:45 a.m. Monday, according to coroner’s officials.

Hunter and Detective Tim Heiden said BNSF shut down operations for about three hours.

“They did not let trains come in while the incident was being investigated,” Hunter said. “They stopped on the tracks.”
