Last night about 8 pm the UP had a derailment of a south bound general freight train at Goshen Calif. The derailment accoured when the axle on the rear truck of the last car broke. The last car and the one ahead derailed. There was some track damage but both cars went outboard and took out some poles along the right of way. This happened between switches of the Goshen siding so the UP was able to run trains around the site until the mess was cleaned up.

At about the same time the last south bound Amtrk struck something on the rails at Figarden. After the train was inspected they continued. At the McKinley Ave crossing (about a mile from my home) they struck a tire and rim laying on the tracks. After stoping again to make sure they had not derailed they continues to the Fresno depot for a complete inspection of the train.

    What a night,

    A messy night!

Being the last cars, probably far from the engines, how did the UP train know it was derailed? Did the train line break? Or does telemetry somehow let them know there's trouble?

    Boxcab,

I guess when the back end of the car went down it knocked the train line off of Fred. [IMG]
