Hi, well due to the fact that my eyesight is not what it used to be and those N scale couplers are just too small for my fat fingers....I have decided to go back to HO. I love N scale, but was having such a hard time troubleshooting N scale, and really used to enjoy painting my own equipment in HO, that I thought I needed to switch back.

i recently retired from BNSF after 34 years (Frisco-BN-BNSF). I'm from New Orleans and enjoy modeling southern scenes. My grandpa and uncles worked in Bogalusa, La with the Great Southern Lumber Co and Crown Zellerbach as conductors and switchmen on the Wood Trains, so I guess that's where my interest originates.

My new layout will be small and mobile -4'x6', based on a plan that I have always liked - Atlas' Simplicity and
Great Plains RR. The setting will be loosely based on the Texas & Pacific main line in Louisiana, between Natchitoches and Cypress Bayou, with one locomotive and a few cars, a logging mill and a few small industries and lots of trees, running on DC. Track will be Bachmann EZ track. (My uncle retired from the TP/MP in Dallas, after moving from Bogalusa.)

One of the problems I have always had with model railroading, and I know some of you have experienced the same thing, is that I keep buying locomotives, equipment, buildings, scenery....and before I know it, I could stock a hobby shop! Too much, as Peter Walsh says in his many books. I became overwhelmed. So I am restarting on a smaller and more reasonable scale. I don't have the room for anything large.

    Anyway, that's me.

Hi Jim, Welcome to the TrainBoard, glad that you're on board. I know your feeling. Over the past 65 years, I went from trying to build the "World's Greatest Empire" to something I can put my arms around mentally. It definitely is more fun now that scenes can be finished instead of only imagined.

Welcome aboard, Jim. I hope you'll take some time to share some of the memories and mementos I'm sure you've acquired from the years of your family's involvement with the rails. Good luck, and as to the size of the collection, perhaps keep in mind one of my favorite old sayings: "He who dies with the most toys, wins!"

Welcome aboard Jim. I know the feeling when we realise we have inadvertantly become collectors, instead of just acquiring the items we actually need! It has taken me 55 years to begin to fight the urge..... ;)

Welcome to Trainboard, Jim. I guess I'm one of the few who has avoided the urge to model. I just chase and ride the steam around.
