Just wondering if anyone has ever replaced the stock 6 wheel trucks with Micro-trains trucks and couplers? If you have what set did you use? From my brief research it looks like set 1018-s are the closet match?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well, they may work OK, but if you are a stickler for prototype, they are not a close match other than having six wheels. They are basic heavyweight style trucks with clasp brakes used on older cars. The Bachmann full dome car is a modern lightweight design that had disk bakes. Kato has produce a closer truck that they use on a number of their cars like the Santa Fe high level diner.
I've looked at mine in hopes of doing the same thing. All I can find is the HW's three axle trucks and they aren't correct for this car. I managed to convert the Rapido Couplers over to Micro-Trains. Don't remember what I used and no it didn't turn out pretty but works.
Yeah at the moment I’m not really concerned with prototype fidelity (my layout is a tail chaser anyways). I was merely wanting to make the older car be able to run with some newer cars. You’d think that since it’s the only example in n scale of this prototype micro trains would’ve released trucks and couplers to upgrade it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I just check and I was in error sort of. The full domes were delivered with modern trucks having clasp brakes and the Bachmann model does indeed have these. I was able to attach Microtrain coupler pockets to the Bachmann trucks while changing out the wheelsets to Imtermountain 36" wheels. However they were later replaced with disk brake trucks. Here is the prototype with the newer trucks. These are pretty close to the ones on the Kato high level dining cars.
I used 1018. Mine is painted for BN, trucks are black. If they are "wrong", you can't see 'em anyway !!! I have another full dome for my TCC "Dashing Turtle" that will get 1018S. TCC swapped out the trucks for parts compatibility with other passenger cars. (Just pulled that one out of my hat !!!)
