Hi; I'm new & glad to be here! Building a B/N layout in N Scale & just lucked into a 6 car smoothside passenger car set. Need help pls. What loco's did B/N use to pull these beauties? Are they avail. in N scale ? Manufacturer? Convertible to DCC ? Thanx Burly
Burly, You must be talking about BN's Hockey Stick scheme. Well depending on the era or train it changed. The cars were painted for the BN in 70 these were the first BN cars and were used on various trains that the BN ran. Here are a few of the trains. You also asked what locos pulled the cars I will list the type E or F after the train name, and the predicessor road that ran the train before the name: CBQ California Service Es CBQ/GN Empire Builder Es/Fs It's hard to explain quickly, but E-mail me at bn9900@yahoo.com and I'll tell you all about the cars and trains they ran on.
Well BN also used SDP40's and SDP45's to pull them, but as for modeling them...... how do you feel about cutting up Katos?
BN didn't run passenger trains for very long (about a year) before Amtrak took over, but you could always use it after that as a business car/office car train, you'll need to get something to represent a steam heat car (converted F B unit?) and then you can use whatever was the nice new power at the time. (they liked showing off nice new stuff with it, I've seen pairs of F45's, or SD40-2's on it in pics, or of course the train heat fitted SDP40/SDP45, but they are quite a kitbash) In more modern times the office car set got a new scheme in dark green & cream, (similar to the BN SD70MACS) and they refurbished a pair of F units to pull it. Very smart
Martyn Right you are. The BN ran Passenger trains from April 1st 70-Feb28th 71. You are right too in the fact that they used SDP40s/45s but also that they used those for freight power and the Es and Fs came back to power the varnish. SDPs were only on the Great Northern so they were only used on the GN trains. Side note the BN Creme/Green Scheme was created for the Executive fleet (BN 1/2) Debuted the scheme in Ft Worth in 90.
Burly, Should have added, if your just starting out in the world of N scale, or if you didn't know....Try to stay away from the Lesser Tyco units, not sure about Bachmann, but the cheaper tyco units have a real bad habbit about the front truck pulling the front axles up out of the track, I have two like new ones I bough and the both do it, No matter how wide your curve are they still do this. I have heard the newer more Proto 2000 like N scale they have with Flywheels are pretty nice and all, as well as Atlas and Kato units. Just thougth I would tell ya.
