Took these Pics yesterday while out on site carrying out inspections. This is an intermodal train run by private operator Australian Rail Group. Not sure what type of Loco but it could be an american Import looks very much like a C30 but it could even be an alco lol.
Paul, Thats cool,I have some prints of those road railers at Chullora, will scan & post them up. BTW they do have that Alco cab look about them but the top round half has been chopped off, also is that a rear end helper/pusher?in that last shot & the location has me stumped too
thanks for the awesome pics! i love seeing foreign trains and how things look elsewhere in the world. -rob
Cool foreign shots...Its interesting how similar that particular train is to American? The locomotives have the short hood of an Alco but definitely the long hood of an EMD? The roller bearing trucks on the cars also look familiar of course Would like to see more!
This is the information I have received from an Australian Newsgroup They were originally Western Australian Government Railways L class units, built in Sydney by Clyde under licence to EMD.
Ex Western Australian Government Railways L Class locomotives, introduced in 1967. Built by Clyde Engineering under license to EMD. 3000 Traction hp Starting tractive effort 95,800 lb Continuous tractive effort 60,634 lb 135 imperial tons in weight. Powered by a 3,200 hp (2240kW) GM diesel engine of 16 Cylinders (turbo-charged).
I noticed something with the platform you were on. It appears that it and the track have a lazy "s" undulation to them. Any reason for this?
I guess that would make them, roughly speaking, an SD40 in US terms? Nice shots, I do like the Genesee & Wyoming paint scheme, it also appears on a bunch of US shortlines power!
Yes they are basically SD40's, as for the paint scheme I think ARG are or were partially owned by Genesee & Wyoming paint scheme. Yes most of our passenger platforms are curved but I'm not sure why.
Looks to be an island platform (track both sides) and it gets wider where the station building is, the line is also curved beyond the bridge which accounts for one part of the S. With built-up platforms they consume materiel if they are wider than needed, so possibly the wiggle is just to go around the platform building?
As I understand the curvature allows the engineer to see down the side of the train better. Then he can tell if everybody either on or off.
Hey all, I'm a Guard (I guess you call them Conductors in the states) for CityRail the commuter operator for Sydney's Metro. Thats a nice shot you have there taken from Dulwich Hill station. As to the reason for the odd shape I believe was due to Wardell Rd Signal Box being in place between the commuter lines serving Bankstown and the goods lines from Botany to Enfield Yd so the line was skewed around the signal box. It in no way improves operational safety. The whole procedure is make an announcement (stand clear) blow whistle, walk onto platform to check the length of the train go back close doors wlak back out to make sure no-one is squashed walk back to cab to give driver the all clear. only takes about 10 secs. Hope it clears it up a bit if not feel free to ask any questions. Alex
Thanks! Wasn't expecting this kind of response. Didn't mean to take over your thread Paul. Welcome aboard Sten! It is a tid bit of info. one might not usually get, so thanks again.
The paint scheme is the same as many railroads in teh US owned by a group that I forget the name... The Huron Central and the Québec & Gatineau share that paint scheme, just to name those... Any one has more info on that ?
Hi all, I thought most of you in the States would regonise that scheme. Australian Railroad Group or ARG for short is partially owned by Genesee & Wyoming. They got into the Aussie scene with the purchase of Australian National which operates in South Australia. That was followed by the purchase (with Wesfarmers) or Westrail (the West Australian Govt network). They also are the rail operator for the consortium Freightlink - which operates Alice Springs - Darwin. It seems they are going purchase crazy in the states - its a pity they got Utah RR though, I liked the previous scheme
