Ooooh...don't go with just a switch to operate your signals! I've got one signal set up on a "signal animator" from http://www.logicrailtech.com and plan to do more (if not upgrade even more to a fully-prototypical system). These signal animators use photo-sensors that turn the signal to red when the train passes, then goes yellow and then green again after a pre-set amount of time. These things are really neat! ;)

does anybody know of a site or have a circuit where I can use photosensors to operate relays for level crossings and signal relay circuits?

are they expensive or hard to install in foam or install at all? if i go to kato track, wich i am using atlas code 80, are kato automatic signals worth it?

Check out the products made by Circuitron. Walthers lists them in both the HO and N catalogs, with some decent descriptions. I built a railroad for a customer some years ago, with complete track detection using the DT-4 circuit boards. They use photo sensors to trigger the circuits. They are a bit particular in that they need filtered DC, but I think someone recently advertised a power supply specifically for the Circuitron circuits.

Also, when you set the sensitivity of the photo sensors, make sure you're not dependent on natural light! I set the sensors during a sunny afternoon, and at night a bell circuit (also offered by Circuitron) started going off! I had to lower the sensivity in a hurry!

If you are planning to use DCC the Kato signols won't work and furthermore, may screw up the DCC signal.
