I own several Atlas SD60M's, two of which are recent releases with the new lower speed motor. My question is, have any of you out there tried to re-motor an older SD60M with the newer motor, and is it a simple switch? I was contemplating re-motoring my older SD60M's with the newer motor so they would all be compatible. Anyone who has either planned or tried this project, your help and/or comments would be appreciated.
Doesn't DCC negate the need to remotor? I always thought that DCC would make Atlas and Kato, LL and Bachmann's run the same speed, sans modifying the motor....
DCC is just not part of my long-term plan. My layout will be standard cab-control when I get around to rebuilding it. I can't even come up with the funds for a pair of MDC CM20's . I will definitely look into the possibility that the motor change is a drop in operation. Thanks everyone for your input. Maybe some day I will take the plunge into the murky waters of DCC...
if you have no dcc setup at the moment, then switching the motor is the solution. The question then would be which approach is reasonable as far as money goes... the new motors are for sure very nice!
DCC is good for what it does. It is not magic however, and will not make a Model Power or a non-Spectrum Bachmann run like a Kato or an Atlas.
