Is it just me, or is the drawbar pull ("15 cars", Model Railroader Mag of the new SD35 a little low for most N Scale diesels?Especially since Atlas has a reputation for building good engines that can pull long strings of cars. I know my old Atlas GP9 and 10+ year old GP30 can outpull the SD35. Is it just me? It runs great, but why so few cars? Thanks and I was just wondering Dave ------------------ NS "We need more SD40s!!!" Brakeman
I can get a good 25 M/T cars with one unit...About 15 on a grade. Hapy Railroading! Dane N. ------------------ BCRailKing@Canada.com Teen Association of Model Railroaders- for information, contact Dane N. at TAMR2860@Canada.com http://www.tamr.org "I was DC, and went DCC!"
I have two SD35s, I am dissapointed in there performance, they wouldn't pull the skin off a pudding. The engine finish is first rate, they just dont seem to pull. A friend has the same problem with his. They where only capable of about 10 - 12 cars on a 2.5% grade.
The one we have on our layout will be used as a yard switcher, so it should manage that job ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery
They are pretty weak to some standards. The funny thing is that you can hear the difference between Kato and Atlas locomotives but when it comes to how they pull, I have no idea what the problem is. I guess it's one of those unexplainable things?! ------------------ Craig Martyn Best Looking Models Around Custom detailing AND N scale detail parts. BLMA N Scale Detail Parts
Is it the drawbar pull or could it be the weight of the loco. I have found that on my 2% grades many of the locos would spin the wheels with 10-15 cars, and once some weight was added they pulled the grade with ease. Art
I'm not sure, but how would you add weight inside that shell? Dave ------------------ NS "We need more SD40s!!!" Brakeman

Dave

I don't have one of these locos but you usually can find an area inside the cab where some lead can go. That will help quite a bit. I really doesn't take much more to help alot. Art
well i just tested my sd35's and i must say i am really let down by these engines.two gp35's pulled the train better than 2 sd35's.oh well i got them for yard transfers and extra motive power anyway.i will still say they have excellent details and that will take up for the lack of pulling so i am still happy with them i guess...... ------------------ ed pinkley home of the pinkley taurus
Oh well, they're still good for those who just like taking pictures of them. Detail is a 10, operation is a 10, drawbar pull is a 4-5. Still a good engine, and it gives you a real excuse to run an MU-ed consist on your trains. Ahhhhh, model trains! Dave ------------------ NS "We need more SD40s!!!" Brakeman
