Hello all, I just bought a Digitrax Super Chief set and have everything working okay, so far. Am thinking about buying a few newer locos and noticed the Atlas' with DCC factory installed decoders. Is there any reason not to buy the factory installed ones, but get the analog and install the Digitrax decoders myself?? Thanks KB PS - I've read the Pro/Con DCC discussions for years, but now that I've gone DCC, it's like having a whole new layout.
Well, the way I understand it is you get two major things with the Digitrax decoder...Transponding and Back EMF. Having said that, I still buy all my Atlas engines with decoders installed. That way I can test them right out of the box and I can use them until I have money/time to install the Digitrax. Until I get to the point where I am using transponding I can live with the locomotives as-is. With discount, it's only about $20 difference in the cost of the loco, and part of that can likely be recovered if you go with the Digitrax decoder by selling the Lenz on the Yellow Forum or on eBay.
I switch all my Atlas over to Digitrax decoders which have the BEMF functions that isn't available in the Lenz decoders that Atlas uses in thier diesels. I use the Lenz 521W and now the new Lenz mini gold series decoder for all hardwired installations in steam and older DC diesels. Stay cool and run steam.....
evin: have fun with your DCC layout. You'll never look back. I haven't had so much fun with trains since I converted to DCC many years ago. Stay cool and run steam.....
Bob I'd have to say you're the first person I think of in terms of DCC. I know you have been an outspoken proponent for the several years I've been trodding the boards. Thanks for your help. KB
Kevin: I try to discuss DCC in a positive manner even when I'm amongst those folks who use analog systems. There comes a point in time when many of the analog users decide to switch to DCC. That has become much more frequent in recent months with so many new advances in DCC. I'm glad I could help you...I'm just returning a favor from the person who helped me many years ago. Stay cool and run steam.....
