I just picked up an Atlas 60' Double Door box car decorated for UP. I know these cars are old news, but this is the first one I have ever bought. I had shyed away from these cars as most of the paint schemes didn't fit my RR. I want to say that these are great cars. The detailing and paint job is excellent.

My question is did the SP ever have any of these cars? I would like to paint a few of these into SP if it is prototypical. I am pretty sure that SP built a lot of their box cars in their home shops just as the ATSF did. Maybe the Atlas car can pass for one of those.

I'm sure that this has been figured out before, but Atlas used individual door pieces for the doors on this car. They can be removed and glued in the open position. Just a thought.

    Brian,
I believe the SP did have some of these cars. If you look at MDC's website I think they have artwork of them as they do a 60' car, although I'm not sure if it's an auto parts car. I don't think there would be much difference in the schemes.

    Brian,
I checked out MDC's website and they have 50' boxcars. So I checked out this page and found one. Rail goat This is an SP 60' auto parts car.

    Brian,
It looks like 2slim is on to something. There are some other 60' boxes on the web site he has posted the link to. I would have to go find one of my Atlas cars to see which one matches best. Looks like they all have the same basic scheme. Bet a string of these cars in SP would look nice. Let us know how one turns out if you paint and decal one. [IMG]
By the way, I didn't ever notice the doors were separate parts. That may just create a new project. Like I really need another project. [IMG]

This is a reply that I got to the same question on Trainorders.com:

I didn't see any pictures on the site previously mentioned that match the paticular Atlas car. There was an SP 60' auto parts box on there that looked like it could pass for one, but it was an FMC car. The Atlas car is an ACF car and has the distinctive side indentations found on 1970's ACF boxcars.

By the way, I already have a kitbash started on the SSW car with the different sized doors. I will post pictures when I am done.
