I haven't gotten a straight answer from anyone yet on this question. (haven't raised it here yet)

How difficult is a decoder install on the Athearn SW1500? I've had people tell me it's a piece of cake, others say it's not an easy install.

I am about to plunge into HO. I've got the Digitrax Zephyr for control. It looks like the DH163AT is a simple conversion, but I don't want to spend the money on something I won't be able to convert.

    Hey Revnjeff,
The correct decoder for the older Blue Box Athearn SW1500 is the Digitrax DH163AT.
I saw a video on how to install this decoder and it looks pretty easy, no soldering.
Can't remember where this video was on the net. The biggest problem during installation was fitting the wiring in so it doesn't touch the flywheels. Hope this helps.

As he asked the question 5 years ago I suspect he's either sorted it or given up.

Hmm, he hasn't posted since Nov 2004, so probably the latter :)

Shouldn't be to difficult, all of the Athearn RTR engines all have a quickplug just waiting for a decoder to be installed. I don't think the amount of space should be a problem if you're going with a silent decoder. I'll crack one open tomorrow (I work at a hobby shop) and see whats going on inside one of those puppies.

Do you know how you open up the SW1500 to access the plug?

Sorry Summerman, but there is no plug for the decoder. The decoder comes with
a clip on every wire. Each wire is color coded and the instructions explains where
    each wire goes.

I Installed 2 decoders into MP15-1 HO (very simular to a SW). Without a doubt you want to use TCS. Here is why. Call them; they have a goof-proof policy. Tell them the model and brand. They will recommend a decoder; actually a mini decoder.
They recommended a M1P-15. Great slow speed ideal for a switcher. If you need help with setting respond & I will help you.
Remove the couplers. Drop (literally) the entire body and chassis onto a block so only the pilot contacts the block. The guts will fall out buy gravity (see the You Tube Video on this). There will be a 8 socket NMRA plug on top. Pull the plug. Insert the decoder & plug per the instructions; placing the decoder where directed. This really was the easiest install of my 8. By the way virtually everone here is a Digitrax "Dingie". Digitrax offers no help. If you screw up; your screwed.

    Keep the Faith.
Oh yeah "You are saved by GRACE thru faith less any should boast".
