quote:
Originally posted by BNSF_9999: Does anyone know when the retooled SD40-2's are gona be released???

They were shipped a couple weeks ago. IMHO, they are very nice, I picked up an undec from my pusher in Anaheim. I was impressed with the improvements! The ones Athearn has shipped so far are the KCS snoot with corrugated grills, CP snoot with chickenwire grills, and Undec snoot with corrugated grills. More versions to follow soon.... ------------------ Have A Nice Day!
Is the drive improved, or just the shell? Also, are so-called "short noses" coming out? Where can I find a picture of this? ------------------ Ship IT on the Frisco! Bob T.

Where can I find a picture of this?

They improved the drive slightly. Instead of the plastic male/female shafts and couplings, it now has solid driveshafts, very much like the ones on the Genesis SD70's, going from the flywheels to the worm gear on the trucks. It's slightly quieter than the previous arrangement; less "rattle", although there is still the typical noise from the trucks, which should quiet down over time. Different early/late short nose versions should be out soon as well, as should the late version of the snoot with Q-fans, exhaust silencer and extended-range dynamics. As for pics, look at http://www.onerrave.com/ under the Railroad Telegraph (scroll down to the Athearn section), and you can also see them at http://www.prestige-hobbies.com/trains-ho.htm . ------------------ Have A Nice Day! ooh yeah Athearn sent me this: Recently we discovered that some quantity of the initial shipment of Santa Fe #1, SD75M’s with cab road number 226 may have a defective handrail for the left side of the long hood. The area noted is the 3 stanchions mounted on the battery box on the left side behind the cab which incorrectly tilt toward the rear of the engine instead of being correctly vertical to the walkway. Also the last 3 or 4 stanchions at the rear of the left and right side may incorrectly lean toward the cab. The misalignment is due to plastic shrinkage during the injection molding process and has been corrected for all future runs. Current shipments of both Santa Fe #1, road number 226 and Santa Fe #2, road number 241 and also Santa Fe #3, the unnumbered unit, have been 100% inspected and approved Replacement handrail sets for the first shipments of Santa Fe SD75M #1 only are available from Athearn for a limited time on a no charge basis. Interesting, has anyone had the problemo, or is Athearn thinking ahead on this one? If they actually are thinking ahead, it would be a nice change for a manufacture to make! Happy Railroading! Since I currently own 5 blue-box Athearn SD40-2s (2 Frisco, 2 UP and one Santa Fe), I'm not really in the market for the new RTR models. I will say that the RTR diesels do look & run nice, having test-run one on a layout. The only thing I may replace, detail-wise, would be the metal handrails for the plastic ones (or the Smoky Valley handrail sets), but after superdetailing all of them, I'm satisfied so far.
I see someone posted here. I really just bumped the thread up because it was so old. Those SD40-2 releases have really come and gone.
I am working the old BB right now and I think I am going to keep the metal handrails. Just my preference for the modular club operations we have.
I have a few RTR SD40-2 locos and I am happy with them. A friend of mine has a few BB SD40-2 locos in BN with many nice details added. They look great and run great so I think it really depends on how much time one has to invest. The BB locos have a slighly lower starting point than RTR in my opinon. But, one can usally find pretty good deals on BB models compared to RTR. For me, RTR is my starting point in my current phase of the hobby.
