Need a little help with the disassembly of the Mikado, as I need to remove the boiler to fix the motor. Don't want to have to take of the drivers at all. It appears if you remove the screw under the leading truck, then pop off the cab, the boiler will pop off in the back and slide off forward. Anybody with any experience on this that could confirm this or point me in the right direction?

    Harron,
I wouldn't do alot to it being Athearn has a lifetime warrenty on them! I'd send it back to them and let them worry about it! Call them and talk to the service department and tell them the problem and all and they will no doubt tell you to pack it up, and send it to them along with enough money to ship it back to you.

A friend of mine Mike K (6206_S1a) has one and had to send his in for a broken wire and all it cost him was shipping to and from Athearn in Compton California!!!!

Well, it's weathered and detailed, don't want to send it anywhere, and I'm hoping to get it done quickly. Also, I'm looking for some space to add a little weight while I have it apart.

The bodies don't void the warrenty! And being I had Mikes opened to a point "rotz of ruck charlie" to find room inside.... Believe me its all filled in! But I wouldn't want to void the warrenty if it should give you mishapse. And thinking of time.. Mike told me they had his 2 weeks, out and back so. but now with the air travel down and all with the World Trade Centers it would be slower so...

But I didn't get Mikes all apart it was some tooling in those I mean I had the reap part of the cab and boiler loose but thats as far as it went..... I took out every screw and bolt to see if it would loosen the boiler and it wasn't happening. Work on him and you'll see what i'm saying.. I think it may snap on in the front as well be bolted but don't quote me on that being like I said I only got the cab abd rear portion of the boiler loosened up! You'll see what I mean when you get that far.. and yes you may want or have to take off the bottom plate that holds the wheels I did and all and kept it turned up side down so the wheels wouldn't fall down out of their places... Word of caustion.. Be carefull with it! Its delicate inside with the DCC plug wires! Thats what was wrong with Mikes! It comes from detaching and reataching the tender and putting the DCC plug and wires up in the tender and it broke a wire off. So becarefull with him! The wires break he will not run!

When Model Railroader did their review it included fairly detailed instructions for disassembly. Unfortunately, I do not remember the month issue. You may want to search for it.
