I purchased this kit last month and am slowly getting to courage to assemble this model. My first impression is that the kit is rather daunting although it has good instructions it does not have a exploded view of what each part is which means you have to guess or try and work out what eact tiny part is used for. They are numbered in the instruction sheet and on the sprue however it would have been nice for a listing and a explanation of each detail part. Here is a picture of the caboose I'm modelling. I'm going to make a start today on the undercarriage details and I'll post the results. Wish me luck
So far so good I have added the undercarriage details, steps and landings. Hopefully more progress next weekend
Thanks Martyn so am I , the end and side railings look very challenging although they do have a template to use. It does involve soldering brass railings etc which I havent done before so watch this space.
I too am following your progress.....I have two MP diesels that need a caboose, and the so-called "doghouse" caboose (slang term by MP railfans) should fit my time frame. So far, it looks good!
This one is still in service, sort of, now just a platform for switching. doors and windows plated over. McAllester, OK.
Mopac cabooses are easy to identify for purpose use by road numbers; 11XXX series used for transfer service 12XXX series used for local service 13XXX series used for road service
River Thanks for posting the pics, yes the model will be great when finished im just a little tentative about the railings etc
Go for it Paul. I'm glad to see there is a kit for this cab as I did not want to spend the $$$ for the brass one. Now I just might need a couple for the Van Buren Sub. Now I need to know where did you find this kit?
Railyard's kits are FANTASTIC. I've built a couple, and have nothing but praise for the quality of the kit castings, details, and instructions (which come on a mini CD-Rom). Not a shake-the-box kit, but eons better than the resin models of yesterday. Dave Hussey has a shot of the RYM Conrail H54 PS-2 4785 I built on his pBase page here: http://www.pbase.com/dh30973/image/50563663 That car was a fun build, and I'm looking forward to building the NACC PD3000 I just ordered from him.
Over the weekend I commenced the end railings and associated items. This is the first time I have used brass railings and after a few attempts I was able to assemble and solder the brass. It's not perfect but im happy with the results I found it is easier to pre tin the areas for soldering. It takes a little practice but so far so good. I still have the other end to assemble but will do that next weekend. Here are pics of the results.
Colonel: It looks pretty good to me. Could you tell us the diameter of the brass wire and the wattage of your soldering iron? Thanks.
This caboose project looks good to me. Unfortunately ( ?? ) I've a few other projects, the new Westport. Wolfgang
