That's a nice looking engine. I just have no need for one. That's why I voted Never. Uh, calm down, Dee. Hmm... I don't even get to vote. Great Ape discrimination...
Ummm, I guess careful what we ask for?I don't need one either, but at least I had the decency not to vote... Now if it were the other big Baldwin, a center cab TD 6-6-2000 transfer switcher, that would be another story...We can dream...but I'm not starting a poll for that one.Otto
The shell would be nice, but there would need to be proper truck sideframes as well. Perhaps another possibility for such a project.
Very cool, I'm glad to see the innovation. But I would have no need for this particular engine. How about an SDL39?
What is the difference in car bodies, between the 416 and 616? At this point in time, I have no use for such an engine. But I do wish you good luck in getting one done.
The main difference is the thickness of the frame. I remember this is one of the issues with these units in a question posed to Atlas years ago as someone would need to create about six different shells to cover all the frame differences. AS-416's tended to have thick frames while AS-616's had thin frames. However, the early AS-616's had thick fabricated frames versus cast later thinner frames as well. Also, the DRS-6-6-15's also could be done with the same shell minding the frame thickness. Changing the trucks to A1A (like the RSC-2 truck) would allow the DRS-6-4-15 to be made. Using the Alco RSD truck would create the few late Phase 3 AS-616's . I would love an AS-616 or two or three...The Atlas RSD4/5 is almost correct on the wheelbase and overall length to use as a mechanism. Anyone doing a shell needs to do the Commonwealth sideframes to mount on the Atlas trucks for a regular 616 (416's and Ph3 616's are covered now). Drawings are in the Dec 1967 MR and attached to them is a whole article in scratch-building one from styrene (from the "Dollar Model Series") so it could be possible to build one - the sideframes are the most complex part. MILW had some of these, so, yes, if I had some reasonable conversion path from something I can acquire without too much blood, sweat, and tears I would do it.
AS-616 - B&LE, C&O, MILW, CNW, SOO, PRR, SP, UP were the major owners. SP & MILW had the cabless versions. The pretty much lookalike DRS-6-6-15's : B&LE, C&O, CNW, SOO, ERIE, McCloud, NP, SP and Union RR Peter
Two of them. But they didn't work out as hoped and only lasted a very short time. About 1&1/2-2 years. Then were converted to cabs.
