My friend (an engineer of 30 years) has been offered a job on the Arizona California Railroad located in Parker Arizona. He wants to give up his railroad job of 31 years to move to Arizona to work on this shortline, anyone have any info on this railroad? I think he's making a mistake, please give me your input.

Parker Arizona, 120° in the shade six months out of the year. Only problem, no shade.

Unless the job is significant in pay, and benefit increases, I'd wonder if worth while. Will it effect his present RR retirement, as earned to date?

I'm not a sizzling hot weather person. Hope he is!

I was in Arizona about a year ago... it was 102 degrees in September, however, it had no humidity, so it was much more bearable than the weather in the Southeastern US in the summer when it is 85 and 90% humidity! [IMG]

I currently live in Phoenix (been here 7 years) but was born and raised in East-Central Illinois just north of Danville. Also lived in Orlando for 8 years.

It DOES get very hot in the Southwest (June-September) but I'd take 110+ with less than 10% humidity ANY day over 90+ with 80%+ humidity in the Midwest and Southeast.

    IMO...

    Mistake!

If he already has the 30yrs, he has got to have access to some really decent high-paying
jobs with his current RR. He also must be fairly close to retiring unless he hired out as a kid.
31 yrs is a lot of "whiskers" to blow off and go
work for a wooden axle pike in Arizona.
Best advice is stay with his current RR until age 60, then pull the pin and move to AZ, if that's what he wants. He'll have decent RR retirement and should be able to get a good deal on medical insurance for retirees.

Actually, the California & Arizona is part of Rail America. They manage numerous regional/shortlines all over the country. Check out their website at: Rail America

I know employees of the California Northern (sister railroad) have always spoken highly of management and, the way the railroad is run.
