I am looking to obtain one of these old engines. It does not have to be in running condition, as I want it for a static display.
I do not recall any RS-2s from Arnold/Rivarrossi. Kato and Atlas both produced models of the Alco RS series. Arnold did produce a S-2 switcher however. And these should still be available in some cases as New in Box as I purchased one that way a few years ago and still see them advertised.
I assume you mean the Arnold S-2. A word of caution: they often suffer from broken gears caused by shrinking of the plastic, this is not a result of use but of age. NWSL sell replacement axles w/ gears, they are in the Walthers catalogue. I will dig out my PRR S-2 and check the gears. P.S.: if you need it for static display, you might get a cheap one w/ broken gears. No need to pay for gears you don't need
There were a few produced by Arnold Rivarossi during the very last gasp for that conglomeration. I was very surprised that they had an all-new mechanism. A friend of mine has a cow/calf set in UP and they do run nice although they don't pull much.
Now that Hornby is starting delivering Arnold stuff again, maybe we have hope to see an upgraded model of the S-2. European models are already on the market (although their pricing has annoyed many dealers here, I can't get them in my LHS), but I am not sure what the situation of the U.S. models is.
You'r right. It is an S-2. Guess I had an extra "r" left over from some other word. Hopefully Hornby with run them again.
OK, I blew it here. It's tough getting old when the old brain cells get confused. What these were are the old Rivarossi SW1500 shells popped on a new chassis that used a lot of parts from the old Arnold S-2. A new cast metal running board/chassis was made to hold the old shell and also hold a tiny motor and much of the S-2 running gear. Sorry bout that.
I have a really old Atlas RSC-2. C-C trucks. Monon black and gold. As I recall, the motor turns, sort of, but not enough to actuially pull itself. One of my junkers that I picked up somewhere as a curiosity. Curious... Any interest? email leighant at hotmail.com (but changed spelled out "at" to symbol "@")
