I have an old, old Arnold Alco S2 switcher that I would like to make a mod to but can't figure out how to disassemble the unit. I am able to get the cab off, but that's it. Can any one tell me how to disassemble the rest of the unit?

Between the trucks, pry out the plastic battery box air tank molding from between the metal doors on the side. There will be tiny screw driver slots visible on two plactic clip/plates. Using these slots, slide the plastic clips to the center of the locomotive. The truck should then drop out. Now you will see a screw at the front of the locomotive. This holds the running board and the contact PC board in place. Once these are removed you can take the motor out.

Here are some instructions I found on another site:

Disassembly of the S2 is a little tricky-

1-Pop off the airtanks- gently prying with a good finger nail will do.

2-Observe the PC Board that is exposed, and notice the little square
divots in the black plastic, slide these together (like a pair of
sliding closet doors). The trucks will be free to drop loose.

3-There is a small screw at the end of the hood- remove this and be
mindfull of the little black clip.

4-Observe the 2 "feet" from the hood that pass through the PC board.
The PC board will slide forward, you may have to lift it a little to
get the clearence to get the feet out. There is a single tab at the
end of the cab otherwise it fits in grooves. (I forget what order the
cab vs. board slide goes... doing this from memory).

5-The motor slides out easily enough at this point.

That should be about it. I have not taken out the glass yet, so I
    have no advice there.

    Russell Straw and NCDaveD,

Thank you very much for the input!! With your instructions I was able to disassemble the unit and am now in the process of making the mods. What I want to do is use the engine in a scene where the lights are on, but the engine does not move. I removed the engine and tapped out the holes for the lights (the cab light was easy, the nose end light took some work). I plan on using one of the Richmond Controls units with two headlights with one in the front and one in the back.

Again, thanks for the information. It was VERY helpful.

    David
