8-40С - whether - it is good, its road performance. I had 4 units, ATLAS SD60M, road performance, at all was bad. I bought new, and also used. DC and DCC. At movement on small speeds, there were jerks. And at faster movement, the unpleasant crunch, from a running gear was distributed. At all which at me were, all was identical. It is expressed on a miscellaneous, someone has more, someone has less. And here I am happy with 2-2 versions. GP and 8-40B, perfectly run.

I've seen a fall in the sale price of the SD70ACEs. The 8-40CWs in UP paint are far a few in between. I'm getting the impression that no one is selling theirs. The ones that are on 'my fav place to shop' are all above the $100.00 mark. :O Now I'm really salivating! lol

I must say thanks for all the replies to my post. I've gotten a lot more knowledge, about the Atlas 8-40CWs, than i expected. That's is why I'm so compelled to visit this website on a daily basis.

Pictured are my 8-40B locos and their B23-7 siblings. In the background are three (3) C630s that are decoder equipped, I paid less $60.00 for each. They are excellent runners, love the slow speed capability too. All impressive units.

I also have a number of the 8-32BHWs, love 'em too!

Hopefully in the new year when the second batch of 8-40CWs hit the shelves, I will be able to afford the 'older run' units. ;)

The main reason you won't see the price drop is that Atlas builds to order, Kato builds to suit Kato. I would say 80% of all the Atlas loco's had a home before they came off of the production line in the form of pre-orders. The remaining units didn't last long on the shelves and because of that, demand has stayed high, along with the prices.

If you waited a year or more for a loco that you ordered, would you turn around and sell it months after you finally picked it up knowing that you could not replace it?

Kato on the other hand has already announced re-runs of most of the ACE's. If somebody see's a chance to turn a profit, they know that they can replace the loco at a later date. Also I think a lot of the ACE's out there are from people that saw the early high prices when roads were selling out fast and grabbed them up, at the LHS just to stick them on Ebay and turn a profit. Now that the ACE's have been re-announced, the panic is not there and prices have deflated.

It's just simply supply and demand. Atlas builds to demand, so the supply is tight. Kato builds what they want, so supply is higher, demand is lower and prices fall. If Kato had not announced the second run of the heritage units, I bet Ebay prices would be way over retail right now.

    Point taken.

The sellers I look for when shopping, are the ones who (for whatever reason/s) don't have a need for the units anymore. I remember some time ago I bought an OMI 3 unit gas turbine set for $400.00 'buy it now'. The seller simply found the items in the attic and advised by a friend that it should sell for there about (aforementioned price) and they posted it 'Buy it now'. It was a stretch for me but I'm a huge fan of UP and didn't hesitate to buy it. After buying it I realized that I'm not much of a collector as I am a model railroader and a shelf piece is just not what I'm looking for, I resold the item. Luckily for me I got almost twice what I had initially paid for the item.

Right now I can only afford bargains and I guess I'll just have wait patiently until that day comes when I see a 8-40CW selling for 50 bucks. Even if it's the day when my great grandson (while scouring Ebay2900) says "Grand pa' you are not gonna believe this.........".

Wow! That's the price of almost (3) Proto GP38-2s......in MoPac paint!
