Trying to remove a split plastic pivot from an older passenger car. Don't know the make, but it has Hong Kong on it. I have pinched the gap and pushed, but to no avail. Obviously, I don't want to break the pivot. I'm making one usable car from two. Thanks for any help. Jim
The best techniques will probably differ from car manufacturer to manufacturer, so knowing which one made your particular car would help us help you. For what it is worth, I use the technique you tried on old Rowa cars, which seem to be designed to be pinched from the top, because they have thin posts with large tabs that would simply break-off if pulled hard enough. For those cars, that works for me. But, Con-Cor cars have a much stouter kingpin with bevelled tabs that are intended to be pulled out from below. For them, I use a tweezer with a very fine point as a pry-bar. I turn the car up-side-down and insert the tweezer from the end of the car, with one side of the tweezer on each side of the pin but well inside the wheels of the truck. I then pry gently by lifting the tweezer handle upward, so that the tweezer sides act as levers against the car bottom and lift the truck away from the car. One advantage to this is that you don't have to remove the car roof to do it. For Atlas cars, I sometimes use a punch to drive the pin out from above, but that is not a split pin, so it probably is not applicable to your situation.
See if you can find your car here: http://www.spookshow.net/passenger/passenger.php With 'Hong Kong' I'll guess Bachmann. I'll guess this? http://www.spookshow.net/passenger/bachold.html
Thanks. Just getting the hang of using Spookshow. Turns out the cars I have are Model Power Lima (Chinese run) heavyweight passenger car.
Oh, those things. Hang on, I'm tearing one apart myself for a project where the only parts salvaged are the roof and underframe.
Mine's Lima Italy that I got secondhand. It's had the clips completely removed, and the hole filled with the ribbed plug that comes with the 6-wheel Microtrains passenger car truck - then the standard pin put back in with the entire top of it cut off flush to clear the axle.
