New from the JnJ stable - the master of the long rumoured 44-tonner. The following was posted on the eGroups N-List by Paul Charland; I've had a few requests from people on this group to send them copies of the scans I have received from Troy at JnJ. I thought it would be easier to post them here at: http://www.egroups.com/files/n_scale/%2ANEW%2AJnJ+GE+44-tonner/ for anyone who is interested. These are scans of the carbody and the mechanism components, and the second is on he sent me this morning of a more complete carbody. Paul You will need to be registered with eGoups in order to view these pics, apparently. Worth having a look at. Usual disclaimer - for information only, no affiliation, et al. I belonged to one list for about a week and didn't like receiving a ton of emails about one topic, so I will pass on the registration. BUT, I thought I must be in HO scale when I saw your post. I would love some 44 tonners. They are used a lot around the large wheat pools here in Vancouver, British Columbia. Please keep us updated on this as others must have need for these on their layout.
Yes you do have to be registered at eGroups to view photos posted in the files there.... But I had earlier asked Paul to email me these two JPGs which I can send to anyone who requests them. Please understand that this project is a work-in-process so you will not see photos of a completed unit. Please email me directly at dondia@gateway.net N Joy Don Brown Tucson AZ
..."I didn't like recieving a ton of email"... me either! you have an option to not recieve email from the groups, if you like, instead you can go visit the files in the "posted" area, but for these pictures you have to be a member of the N scale group mentioned, not just an egroup member I am a member of two groups and it wouldn't let me see them... www.tunnel13.com [This message has been edited by espee2 (edited 09 January 2001).]
I am a member of several e-groups lists, and I set the preferences to "no mail, wesite only" or something like that I too used to get tons of mail! ------------------ Alan Curtis. Moderator. On eGroups, rather than getting individual emails, you can subscribe to a digest version sent once a day saving individual emails, or do as Alan has done and have browser-based access to the posts. For N Scalers, I feel the N-list is a useful adjunct to our own N Scale forum here and other fora. For those that choose not to subscribe to eGroups I will maintain an update on this project or, Don, if Paul wouldn't mind the pics being posted here, maybe you can do the honours? I would love to have a couple of 44 toners... that would make my new switching layout be just about perfect. Art

Now this sucker must be over 1/2 mile in length so we are going to have one that runs from one end of the layout to the other, but not in a straight line... it will be in a somewhat U shape, and that means 35' in real length. This is because someone, namely you talked about running the through trains all around the cellar. Thanks Catt next thing we will be laying track to follow the Lake Shore Limited. You can lay track down to meet us. Art
I still think we should run rails from your house to mine.Just 903 real miles of mainline.Anybody want in on this project? ------------------ Catt!#118 - A freelancer to the very end
Yea, why you guys are at it run the main out to Seattle, mabey we could contract with BNSF and out a line through Cascade tunnle! Kevin
A five thousand mile long N scale layout.Bet that would impress the HO guys. How many Nscale miles is that?I'd love to see the motorist's reaction at the rail/road crossings. ------------------ Catt!#118 - A freelancer to the very end
They wont react, you will be t5he one reacting when you have to drive 3000 miles to sweep up the remains of you train that someone ran over! The HO guys will laugh at us. Kevin

Important info on this new loco project from Jnj, reposted here from the n_scale email list at egroups.com ************ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 04:38:54 -0000 From: "Troy Borgerson" <jnjtrains@dwx.com> Subject: Re: j n j 44 tonner Hello Ben, The truck centers are about 16 feet, prototype is 18' 9". This is a compromise due to the size of gears in the trucks. Axle centers are 7 foot, prototype is 6'10". Wheel size is 40", prototype is 33". I tried 33" wheels, they let the truck rub on the rails. NWSL is sending me some 36" to try. The kit will be supplied with 40" wheels, if the 36" work they can be changed by the customer very easily. Maximum hood height from top of walkway is 7 feet, protoype is 6'9". Shell length is 30 feet, prototype is 29'6". Shell roof height above track is about 15 feet( this is because of the truck/gear style and 40" wheels), protoype is 13 feet. The shell is very close to prototype. Unfortunately I had to compromise in the truck and coupler areas. I did not want to make my own trucks, but nothing that was available was close except for Bachmann Brill trolley trucks. They did not run well and I've found it difficult to get parts from them. So I did have to make my own trucks but I drew the line at making my own gears!!! The couplers are something else I wish I could change. There is only .010" between the front of the truck and the back of the plow. There's not a shoehorn big enough to get any coupler under the body. I've talked to Micro-Trains and I'm working on a less pronounced coupler. As it is right now, couplers are truck mounted and will take rapido type or drop in MT # 1128. Hope I've answered your questions. Troy JnJ ********** N Joy Don Brown Tucson AZ
